Jacob Embalmed

1And Joseph fell upon his father's face, and wept upon him, and kissed him.

2And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father: and the physicians embalmed Israel.

3And forty days were fulfilled for him; for so are fulfilled the days of those which are embalmed: and the Egyptians mourned for him threescore and ten days.

The Burial Procession

4And when the days of his mourning were past, Joseph spake unto the house of Pharaoh, saying, If now I have found grace in your eyes, speak, I pray you, in the ears of Pharaoh, saying,

5My father made me swear, saying, Lo, I die: in my grave which I have digged for me in the land of Canaan, there shalt thou bury me. Now therefore let me go up, I pray thee, and bury my father, and I will come again.

6And Pharaoh said, Go up, and bury thy father, according as he made thee swear.

7And Joseph went up to bury his father: and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt,

8And all the house of Joseph, and his brethren, and his father's house: only their little ones, and their flocks, and their herds, they left in the land of Goshen.

9And there went up with him both chariots and horsemen: and it was a very great company.

10And they came to the threshingfloor of Atad, which is beyond Jordan, and there they mourned with a great and very sore lamentation: and he made a mourning for his father seven days.

11And when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning in the floor of Atad, they said, This is a grievous mourning to the Egyptians: wherefore the name of it was called Abel-mizraim, which is beyond Jordan.

12And his sons did unto him according as he commanded them:

13↔For his sons carried him into the land of Canaan, and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, which Abraham bought with the field for a possession of a burying place of Ephron the Hittite, before Mamre.

Joseph Forgives His Brothers

14And Joseph returned into Egypt, he, and his brethren, and all that went up with him to bury his father, after he had buried his father.

15And when Joseph's brethren saw that their father was dead, they said, Joseph will peradventure hate us, and will certainly requite us all the evil which we did unto him.

16And they sent a messenger unto Joseph, saying, Thy father did command before he died, saying,

17So shall ye say unto Joseph, Forgive, I pray thee now, the trespass of thy brethren, and their sin; for they did unto thee evil: and now, we pray thee, forgive the trespass of the servants of the God of thy father. And Joseph wept when they spake unto him.

18And his brethren also went and fell down before his face; and they said, Behold, we be thy servants.

19And Joseph said unto them, Fear not: for am I in the place of God?

20↔But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive.

21Now therefore fear ye not: I will nourish you, and your little ones. And he comforted them, and spake kindly unto them.

Joseph's Death

22And Joseph dwelt in Egypt, he, and his father's house: and Joseph lived an hundred and ten years.

23And Joseph saw Ephraim's children of the third generation: the children also of Machir the son of Manasseh were brought up upon Joseph's knees.

24And Joseph said unto his brethren, I die: and God will surely visit you, and bring you out of this land unto the land which he sware to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

25↔And Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you, and ye shall carry up my bones from hence.

26So Joseph died, being an hundred and ten years old: and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.

Jacob Embalmed and Buried

3Forty days were used for him, for that is how long it takes to embalm. The Egyptians mourned for him seventy days.

4When the days of mourning for him were past, Joseph spoke to the house of Pharaoh, saying, "If now I have found favor in your eyes, please speak in the ears of Pharaoh, saying,

5'My father made me swear, saying, "Behold, I am dying. Bury me in my grave which I have dug for myself in the land of Canaan." Now therefore, please let me go up and bury my father, and I will come again.'"

6Pharaoh said, "Go up, and bury your father, just as he made you swear."

7Joseph went up to bury his father; and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his house, all the elders of the land of Egypt,

8all the house of Joseph, his brothers, and his father's house. Only their little ones, their flocks, and their herds, they left in the land of Goshen.

9There went up with him both chariots and horsemen. It was a very great company.

10They came to the threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, and there they mourned with a great and very sore lamentation. He mourned for his father seven days.

11When the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning in the floor of Atad, they said, "This is a grievous mourning by the Egyptians." Therefore, its name was called Abel Mizraim, which is beyond the Jordan.

12His sons did to him just as he had commanded them,

13↔for his sons carried him into the land of Canaan, and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, which Abraham bought with the field, for a possession of a burial site, from Ephron the Hittite, before Mamre.

Joseph Reassures His Brothers

14Joseph returned into Egypt — he, and his brothers, and all that went up with him to bury his father, after he had buried his father.

15When Joseph's brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, "It may be that Joseph will hate us, and will fully pay us back for all the evil which we did to him."

16They sent a message to Joseph, saying, "Your father commanded before he died, saying,

17'You shall tell Joseph, "Now please forgive the disobedience of your brothers, and their sin, because they did evil to you."' Now, please forgive the disobedience of the servants of the God of your father." Joseph wept when they spoke to him.

18His brothers also went and fell down before his face. They said, "Behold, we are your servants."

19Joseph said to them, "Don't be afraid, for am I in the place of God?

20↔As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save many people alive.

21Now therefore don't be afraid. I will provide for you and your little ones." He comforted them, and spoke kindly to them.

Joseph's Final Years and Death

22Joseph lived in Egypt, he and his father's house. Joseph lived one hundred ten years.

23Joseph saw Ephraim's children to the third generation. The children also of Machir, the son of Manasseh, were born on Joseph's knees.

24Joseph said to his brothers, "I am dying, but God will surely visit you, and bring you up out of this land to the land which he swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob."

25↔Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel, saying, "God will surely visit you, and you shall carry up my bones from here."

26So Joseph died, being one hundred ten years old, and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.

4And the days of his weeping pass away, and Joseph speaketh unto the house of Pharaoh, saying, 'If, I pray you, I have found grace in your eyes, speak, I pray you, in the ears of Pharaoh, saying,

5My father caused me to swear, saying, Lo, I am dying; in my burying-place which I digged for myself in the land of Canaan, there thou dost bury me; and now, let me go up, I pray thee, and bury my father, then I come back.'

6And Pharaoh saith, 'Go up and bury thy father, as he caused thee to swear.'

7And Joseph goeth up to bury his father, and there go up with him all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt,

8and all the house of Joseph, and his brethren, and his father's house; only their infants, and their flock, and their herd, they have left in the land of Goshen.

9And there go up with him both chariot and horsemen, and the camp is very great.

10And they come unto the threshing-floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, and they lament there a very great and heavy lamentation, and he maketh for his father a mourning of seven days.

11And the inhabitant of the land, the Canaanite, seeth the mourning in the floor of Atad, and saith, 'This is a grievous mourning to the Egyptians;' therefore hath its name been called Abel-Mizraim, which is beyond the Jordan.

12And his sons do to him so as he commanded them,

13↔and his sons carry him to the land of Canaan, and bury him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, which Abraham bought with the field for a possession of a burying-place, from Ephron the Hittite, before Mamre.

Joseph Reassures His Brothers

14And Joseph turneth back to Egypt, he and his brethren, and all those going up with him to bury his father, after his burying his father.

15And Joseph's brethren see that their father is dead, and they say, 'Perhaps Joseph doth hate us, and will certainly return to us all the evil which we have done to him.'

16And they charge Joseph, saying, 'Thy father commanded before his death, saying,

17Thus ye say unto Joseph, O that thou wouldest forgive the transgression of thy brethren and their sin! for they did to thee evil; and now, forgive, we pray thee, the transgression of the servants of the God of thy father.' And Joseph weepeth when they speak unto him.

18And his brethren also go and fall before his face, and say, 'Lo, we are to thee for servants.'

19And Joseph saith unto them, 'Fear not, for am I in the place of God?

20↔and ye — ye thought evil against me; God thought it for good, in order to do as at this day — to keep alive a great people;

21and now, fear not: I nourish you and your infants;' and he comforteth them, and speaketh unto their heart.

Joseph's Final Years and Death

22And Joseph dwelleth in Egypt, he and the house of his father, and Joseph liveth a hundred and ten years,

23and Joseph seeth to Ephraim children of the third generation; also, sons of Machir, son of Manasseh, have been born on Joseph's knees.

24And Joseph saith unto his brethren, 'I am dying, and God doth certainly inspect you, and hath brought you up out of this land, unto the land which He sware to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.'

25↔And Joseph causeth the sons of Israel to swear, saying, 'God doth certainly inspect you, and ye have brought up my bones from hence.'

26And Joseph dieth, a son of a hundred and ten years, and they embalm him, and he is put in a coffin in Egypt.
