Thirteen years pass between Genesis 16 and 17 in a single verse. Abram is now ninety-nine. God appears again, changes both their names — Abram to Abraham, Sarai to Sarah — and establishes circumcision as the physical sign of the covenant. For the first time, God explicitly includes Sarah in the covenant promise: she will bear a son. Abraham laughs.
