Jacob has grown wealthy and Laban's sons resent it. God tells Jacob to return to Canaan. Jacob calls Rachel and Leah to the field and explains: God has been with me, your father has cheated me ten times, but God has protected me. They agree to leave. Jacob departs secretly while Laban is away shearing sheep. Rachel steals Laban's household gods. Laban pursues and catches up seven days later. He searches for his gods but does not find them — Rachel sits on them. Jacob confronts Laban with twenty years of faithful service met with deception. They make a covenant at a heap of stones: Mizpah. 'The LORD watch between you and me when we are absent from one another.'
