Jacob heads home. Angels meet him — he calls the place Mahanaim, 'two camps.' He sends messengers to Esau and hears back: Esau is coming with four hundred men. Jacob is afraid. He divides his family into two groups, prays one of the most honest prayers in Genesis — 'I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies' — and sends a massive gift ahead to appease his brother. That night, alone by the ford of Jabbok, a man wrestles with him until daybreak. The man cannot prevail against Jacob and touches his hip socket. Jacob will not let go without a blessing. The man asks his name. Jacob says his name. The man gives him a new name: Israel — 'he wrestles with God.' Jacob calls the place Peniel: 'I have seen God face to face, and yet my life has been delivered.'
