Esau is coming with four hundred men. Jacob arranges his family in order of precedence — handmaids first, Leah and her children, Rachel and Joseph last. He goes ahead and bows to the ground seven times as he approaches his brother. Esau runs to meet him and embraces him and falls on his neck and kisses him and they weep. The reunion is total and immediate. Esau offers to travel together; Jacob declines gently, citing his children and flocks. They separate peacefully. Jacob arrives at Shechem and buys a plot of land — the first land purchase in Canaan since Abraham bought Machpelah. He erects an altar and calls it El Elohe Israel: God, the God of Israel.
