When Tamar — his daughter-in-law — is denied her right to levirate marriage, she disguises herself as a prostitute, sleeps with Judah unknowingly, and produces the twins Perez and Zerah. Judah, confronted with the evidence, says: "She is more righteous than I." Tamar is one of the four women named in Matthew's genealogy of Jesus.
