Jacob sends ten sons to Egypt to buy grain. Benjamin stays home. Joseph recognizes his brothers but does not reveal himself; they do not recognize him. He accuses them of being spies, holds Simeon as hostage, and demands they bring Benjamin on their next trip. On the return journey they discover their money has been returned in their sacks. The dormant guilt of selling Joseph twenty years earlier rises to the surface: "We are truly guilty concerning our brother."
