Jacob Goes Down to Egypt

Israel sets out with everything he has. At Beer-sheba he stops and offers sacrifices. God speaks to him in a night vision: "Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for I will make you a great nation there. I will also surely bring you up again." A genealogy of the seventy souls who go down follows. Jacob sends Judah ahead to Goshen. Joseph harnesses his chariot and goes to meet his father — and weeps on his neck a long while.
