Jacob is dying. Joseph brings his two Egyptian-born sons to receive their grandfather's blessing. Jacob adopts them formally as his own sons, equal to Reuben and Simeon. Then he crosses his hands — deliberately putting his right hand on Ephraim, the younger, and his left on Manasseh, the firstborn. Joseph tries to correct him; Jacob refuses. The younger will be greater. This is the last of Genesis's reversed-firstborn blessings: Abel, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph (over Reuben), and now Ephraim.
