Jacob gathers all twelve sons and pronounces tribal destinies in ancient Hebrew poetry — one of the oldest poems in the Bible. Reuben loses the firstborn blessing for desecrating his father's bed. Simeon and Levi are scattered for the Shechem massacre. Judah receives the scepter blessing: "The scepter shall not depart from Judah… until Shiloh come." Joseph receives the richest blessing. Jacob then asks to be buried in the cave of Machpelah, and dies.
