The Surrogate Arrangement
1Now Sarai Abram's wife bare him no children: and she had an handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar.
2And Sarai said unto Abram, Behold now, the LORD hath restrained me from bearing: I pray thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai.
3And Sarai Abram's wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife.
4And he went in unto Hagar, and she conceived: and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes.
5And Sarai said unto Abram, My wrong be upon thee: I have given my maid into thy bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes: the LORD judge between me and thee.
6But Abram said unto Sarai, Behold, thy maid is in thy hand; do to her as it pleaseth thee. And when Sarai dealt hardly with her, she fled from her face.

7↔And the angel of the LORD found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur.
8And he said, Hagar, Sarai's maid, whence camest thou? and whither wilt thou go? And she said, I flee from the face of my mistress Sarai.
9And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands.
10And the angel of the LORD said unto her, I will multiply thy seed exceedingly, that it shall not be numbered for multitude.
11And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Behold, thou art with child, and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael; because the LORD hath heard thy affliction.
12And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man's hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.
13↔And she called the name of the LORD that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that seeth me?
14Wherefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.
15And Hagar bare Abram a son: and Abram called his son's name, which Hagar bare, Ishmael.
16And Abram was fourscore and six years old, when Hagar bare Ishmael to Abram.

3Sarai, Abram's wife, took Hagar the Egyptian, her handmaid, after Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to Abram her husband to be his wife.
4He went in to Hagar, and she conceived. When she saw that she had conceived, she looked down on her mistress.
5Sarai said to Abram, "This wrong is your fault. I gave my handmaid into your bosom, and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes. May Yahweh judge between me and you."
6But Abram said to Sarai, "Behold, your maid is in your hand. Do to her whatever is good in your eyes." Sarai dealt harshly with her, and she fled from her face.
The Angel at the Spring
7↔Yahweh's angel found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, by the spring on the way to Shur.
8He said, "Hagar, Sarai's handmaid, where did you come from? Where are you going?" She said, "I am fleeing from the face of my mistress Sarai."
9The angel of Yahweh said to her, "Return to your mistress, and submit yourself under her hands."
10Yahweh's angel said to her, "I will greatly multiply your offspring, that they will not be counted for multitude."
11Yahweh's angel said to her, "Behold, you are with child, and will bear a son. You shall call his name Ishmael, because Yahweh has heard your affliction.
12He will be like a wild donkey among men. His hand will be against every man, and every man's hand against him. He will live opposite all of his brothers."
13↔She called the name of Yahweh who spoke to her, You are a God who sees; for she said, "Have I even stayed alive after seeing him?"
14Therefore the well was called Beer Lahai Roi. Behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.
15Hagar bore Abram a son. Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael.
16Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.

3And Sarai, Abram's wife, taketh Hagar the Egyptian, her handmaid, at the end of the tenth year of Abram's dwelling in the land of Canaan, and giveth her to Abram her husband, to him for a wife,
4And he goeth in unto Hagar, and she conceiveth; and she seeth that she hath conceived, and her mistress is lightly esteemed in her eyes.
5And Sarai saith unto Abram, `My violence is for thee; I--I have given mine handmaid into thy bosom, and she seeth that she hath conceived, and I am lightly esteemed in her eyes; Jehovah doth judge between me and thee.'
6And Abram saith unto Sarai, 'Lo, thy handmaid is in thy hand; do to her that which is good in thine eyes;' and Sarai humbleth her, and she fleeth from her face.

8And he saith, 'Hagar, handmaid of Sarai, whence hast thou come? and whither dost thou go?' and she saith, 'From the face of my mistress Sarai I am fleeing.'
9And the messenger of Jehovah saith to her, `Turn back unto thy mistress, and humble thyself under her hands;'
10and the messenger of Jehovah saith to her, `Multiplying I multiply thy seed, and it is not numbered from multitude;'
11And a messenger of Jehovah saith to her, 'Lo, thou art pregnant, and bearest a son, and hast called his name Ishmael, for Jehovah hath hearkened unto thine affliction.
12and he is a wild-ass man, his hand against every one, and every one's hand against him--and before the face of all his brethren he dwelleth.'
13↔And she calleth the name of Jehovah, who is speaking unto her, Thou art a God of seeing; for she said, 'Even here have I looked after Him who seeth me?'
14Therefore hath the well been called, Beer-Lahai-Roi; lo, between Kadesh and Bered.
15And Hagar beareth to Abram a son, and Abram calleth the name of his son whom Hagar hath borne — Ishmael.
16And Abram is a son of eighty and six years in Hagar's bearing Ishmael to Abram.

The Hebrew of v.13 is notoriously difficult: the second clause has been translated dozens of ways. The YLT renders it 'Even here have I looked after Him who seeth me?' — suggesting a sense of awe that she has survived a divine encounter. The KJV's 'Have I also here looked after him that seeth me?' is ambiguous in the same productive way.
