Pharaoh's Dreams

1And it came to pass at the end of two full years, that Pharaoh dreamed: and, behold, he stood by the river.

2And, behold, there came up out of the river seven well favoured kine and fatfleshed; and they fed in a meadow.

3And, behold, seven other kine came up after them out of the river, ill favoured and leanfleshed; and stood by the other kine upon the brink of the river.

4And the ill favoured and leanfleshed kine did eat up the seven well favoured and fat kine. So Pharaoh awoke.

5And he slept and dreamed the second time: and, behold, seven ears of corn came up upon one stalk, rank and good.

6And, behold, seven thin ears and blasted with the east wind sprung up after them.

7And the seven thin ears devoured the seven rank and full ears. And Pharaoh awoke, and, behold, it was a dream.

8And it came to pass in the morning that his spirit was troubled; and he sent and called for all the magicians of Egypt, and all the wise men thereof: and Pharaoh told them his dream; but there was none that could interpret them unto Pharaoh.

Joseph Summoned

9↔Then spake the chief butler unto Pharaoh, saying, I do remember my faults this day:

10Pharaoh was wroth with his servants, and put me in ward in the captain of the guard's house, both me and the chief baker:

11And we dreamed a dream in one night, I and he; we dreamed each man according to the interpretation of his dream.

12And there was there with us a young man, an Hebrew, servant to the captain of the guard; and we told him, and he interpreted to us our dreams; to each man according to his dream he did interpret.

13And it came to pass, as he interpreted to us, so it was; me he restored unto mine office, and him he hanged.

14Then Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, and they brought him hastily out of the dungeon: and he shaved himself, and changed his raiment, and came in unto Pharaoh.

Joseph Interprets the Dreams

15And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, I have dreamed a dream, and there is none that can interpret it: and I have heard say of thee, that thou canst understand a dream to interpret it.

16↔And Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, It is not in me: God shall give Pharaoh an answer of peace.

17And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, In my dream, behold, I stood upon the bank of the river:

18And, behold, there came up out of the river seven kine, fatfleshed and well favoured; and they fed in a meadow:

19And, behold, seven other kine came up after them, poor and very ill favoured and leanfleshed, such as I never saw in all the land of Egypt for badness:

20And the lean and the ill favoured kine did eat up the first seven fat kine:

21And when they had eaten them up, it could not be known that they had eaten them; but they were still ill favoured, as at the beginning. So I awoke.

22And I saw in my dream, and, behold, seven ears came up in one stalk, full and good:

23And, behold, seven ears, withered, thin, and blasted with the east wind, sprung up after them:

24And the thin ears devoured the seven good ears: and I told this unto the magicians; but there was none that could declare it to me.

25And Joseph said unto Pharaoh, The dream of Pharaoh is one: God hath shewed Pharaoh what he is about to do.

26The seven good kine are seven years; and the seven good ears are seven years: the dream is one.

27And the seven thin and ill favoured kine that came up after them are seven years; and the seven empty ears blasted with the east wind shall be seven years of famine.

28This is the thing which I have spoken unto Pharaoh: What God is about to do he sheweth unto Pharaoh.

29Behold, there come seven years of great plenty throughout all the land of Egypt:

30And there shall arise after them seven years of famine; and all the plenty shall be forgotten in the land of Egypt; and the famine shall consume the land;

31And the plenty shall not be known in the land by reason of that famine following; for it shall be very grievous.

32↔And for that the dream was doubled unto Pharaoh twice; it is because the thing is established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass.

Joseph Appointed Over Egypt

33Now therefore let Pharaoh look out a man discreet and wise, and set him over the land of Egypt.

34Let Pharaoh do this, and let him appoint officers over the land, and take up the fifth part of the land of Egypt in the seven plenteous years.

35And let them gather all the food of those good years that come, and lay up corn under the hand of Pharaoh, and let them keep food in the cities.

36And that food shall be for store to the land against the seven years of famine, which shall be in the land of Egypt; that the land perish not through the famine.

37And the thing was good in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of all his servants.

38And Pharaoh said unto his servants, Can we find such a one as this is, a man in whom the Spirit of God is?

39And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, Forasmuch as God hath shewed thee all this, there is none so discreet and wise as thou art:

40↔Thou shalt be over my house, and according unto thy word shall all my people be ruled: only in the throne will I be greater than thou.

41And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, See, I have set thee over all the land of Egypt.

42↔And Pharaoh took off his ring from his hand, and put it upon Joseph's hand, and arrayed him in vestures of fine linen, and put a gold chain about his neck;

43And he made him to ride in the second chariot which he had; and they cried before him, Bow the knee: and he made him ruler over all the land of Egypt.

44And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, I am Pharaoh, and without thee shall no man lift up his hand or foot in all the land of Egypt.

45And Pharaoh called Joseph's name Zaphnath-paaneah; and he gave him to wife Asenath the daughter of Potipherah priest of On. And Joseph went out over all the land of Egypt.

46And Joseph was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh king of Egypt. And Joseph went out from the presence of Pharaoh, and went throughout all the land of Egypt.

The Seven Years of Plenty

47And in the seven plenteous years the earth brought forth by handfuls.

48And he gathered up all the food of the seven years, which were in the land of Egypt, and laid up the food in the cities: the food of the field, which was round about every city, laid he up in the same.

49And Joseph gathered corn as the sand of the sea, very much, until he left numbering; for it was without number.

50And unto Joseph were born two sons before the years of famine came, which Asenath the daughter of Potipherah priest of On bare unto him.

51And Joseph called the name of the firstborn Manasseh: For God, said he, hath made me forget all my toil, and all my father's house.

52And the name of the second called he Ephraim: For God hath caused me to be fruitful in the land of my affliction.

The Famine Begins

53And the seven years of plenteousness, that was in the land of Egypt, were ended.

54And the seven years of dearth began to come, according as Joseph had said: and the dearth was in all lands; but in all the land of Egypt there was bread.

55And when all the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried to Pharaoh for bread: and Pharaoh said unto all the Egyptians, Go unto Joseph; what he saith to you, do.

56And the famine was over all the face of the earth: And Joseph opened all the storehouses, and sold unto the Egyptians; and the famine waxed sore in the land of Egypt.

57↔And all countries came into Egypt to Joseph for to buy corn; because that the famine was so sore in all lands.

Pharaoh's Dreams

1At the end of two full years, Pharaoh dreamed, and behold, he stood by the river.

2Behold, seven cattle came up out of the river, sleek and fat, and they fed in the marsh grass.

3Behold, seven other cattle came up after them out of the river, ugly and thin, and stood by the other cattle on the brink of the river.

4The ugly and thin cattle ate up the seven sleek and fat cattle. So Pharaoh awoke.

5He slept and dreamed a second time, and behold, seven heads of grain came up on one stalk, healthy and good.

6Behold, seven heads of grain, thin and blasted with the east wind, sprung up after them.

7The thin heads of grain swallowed up the seven healthy and full heads of grain. Pharaoh awoke, and behold, it was a dream.

8In the morning, his spirit was troubled, and he sent and called for all the magicians of Egypt, and all its wise men. Pharaoh told them his dreams, but there was no one who could interpret them to Pharaoh.

Joseph Summoned

9↔Then the chief cupbearer spoke to Pharaoh, saying, "I remember my faults today.

10Pharaoh was angry with his servants, and put me in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, me and the chief baker.

11We dreamed a dream in one night, I and he. We dreamed each man according to the interpretation of his dream.

12There was with us there a young man, a Hebrew, servant to the captain of the guard, and we told him, and he interpreted to us our dreams. To each man according to his dream he interpreted.

13As he interpreted to us, so it was: he restored me to my office, and hanged the other."

14Then Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, and they brought him hastily out of the dungeon. He shaved himself, changed his clothing, and came in to Pharaoh.

Joseph Interprets the Dreams

15Pharaoh said to Joseph, "I have dreamed a dream, and there is no one who can interpret it. I have heard it said of you, that when you hear a dream you can interpret it."

16↔Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, "Apart from me, God will give Pharaoh an answer of peace."

17Pharaoh spoke to Joseph, "In my dream, behold, I stood on the brink of the river;

18and behold, seven cattle, fat and sleek, came up out of the river, and they fed in the marsh grass.

19Behold, seven other cattle came up after them, poor and very ugly and thin, such as I never saw in all the land of Egypt for ugliness.

20The thin and ugly cattle ate up the first seven fat cattle,

21and when they had eaten them up, it couldn't be known that they had eaten them, for they were still ugly, as at the beginning. So I awoke.

22I saw in my dream, and behold, seven heads of grain came up on one stalk, full and good;

24The thin heads of grain swallowed up the seven good heads of grain. I told it to the magicians, but there was no one who could explain it to me."

25Joseph said to Pharaoh, "The dream of Pharaoh is one. What God is about to do he has declared to Pharaoh.

26The seven good cattle are seven years; and the seven good heads of grain are seven years. The dream is one.

27The seven thin and ugly cattle that came up after them are seven years, and also the seven empty heads of grain blasted with the east wind will be seven years of famine.

28This is the thing which I spoke to Pharaoh. What God is about to do he has shown to Pharaoh.

29Behold, seven years of great plenty are coming throughout all the land of Egypt.

30After them, seven years of famine will arise, and all the plenty will be forgotten in the land of Egypt. The famine will consume the land,

31and the plenty will not be known in the land because of that famine which follows; for it will be very severe.

32↔The dream was doubled to Pharaoh, because the thing is established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass.

Joseph Appointed Over Egypt

33Now therefore let Pharaoh look for a discreet and wise man, and set him over the land of Egypt.

34Let Pharaoh do this, and let him appoint overseers over the land, and take up the fifth part of the land of Egypt's produce in the seven plenteous years.

35Let them gather all the food of those good years that come, and lay up grain under the hand of Pharaoh, for food in the cities, and let them keep it.

36The food will be for a store against the seven years of famine, which will be in the land of Egypt; that the land not perish through the famine."

37The thing was good in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of all his servants.

38Pharaoh said to his servants, "Can we find such a one as this, a man in whom is the Spirit of God?"

39Pharaoh said to Joseph, "Because God has shown you all of this, there is no one so discreet and wise as you.

40↔You shall be over my house, and according to your word will all my people be ruled. Only in the throne will I be greater than you."

41Pharaoh said to Joseph, "Behold, I have set you over all the land of Egypt."

42↔Pharaoh took off his signet ring from his hand, and put it on Joseph's hand, and arrayed him in robes of fine linen, and put a gold chain about his neck.

43He made him to ride in the second chariot which he had. They cried before him, "Bow the knee!" He set him over all the land of Egypt.

44Pharaoh said to Joseph, "I am Pharaoh, and without you no man will lift up his hand or his foot in all the land of Egypt."

45Pharaoh called Joseph's name Zaphenath-Paneah, and he gave him Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera priest of On as a wife. Joseph went out over the land of Egypt.

46Joseph was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh king of Egypt. Joseph went out from the presence of Pharaoh, and went throughout all the land of Egypt.

The Seven Years of Plenty

47In the seven plentiful years the earth produced abundantly.

48He gathered up all the food of the seven years which were in the land of Egypt, and laid up the food in the cities. He put the food in each city from the fields around it.

49Joseph laid up grain as the sand of the sea, very much, until he stopped counting, for it was without number.

50To Joseph were born two sons before the year of famine came, whom Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera priest of On, bore to him.

51Joseph called the name of the firstborn Manasseh, "For God has made me forget all my toil and all my father's house."

52The name of the second, he called Ephraim, "For God has made me fruitful in the land of my affliction."

The Famine Begins

53The seven years of plenty that were in the land of Egypt came to an end.

54The seven years of famine began to come, just as Joseph had said. There was famine in all lands, but in all the land of Egypt there was bread.

55When all the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried to Pharaoh for bread, and Pharaoh said to all the Egyptians, "Go to Joseph. What he says to you, do."

56The famine was over all the surface of the earth. Joseph opened all the storehouses, and sold to the Egyptians. The famine was severe in the land of Egypt.

57↔All countries came into Egypt, to Joseph, to buy grain, because the famine was severe in all the earth.

Pharaoh's Dreams

1And it cometh to pass, at the end of two years of days, that Pharaoh is dreaming, and lo, he is standing by the River,

2and lo, from the River coming up are seven kine, of beautiful appearance, and fat in flesh, and they feed in the reed-grass;

3and lo, seven other kine coming up after them from the River, of bad appearance and thin in flesh, and they stand near the kine on the edge of the River;

4and the kine of bad appearance and thin in flesh eat up the seven kine of beautiful appearance and fat; and Pharaoh awaketh.

5And he sleepeth and dreameth a second time, and lo, seven ears going up on one stalk, fat and good;

6and lo, seven ears, thin and blasted with an east wind, springing up after them,

7and the thin ears swallow the seven fat and full ears; and Pharaoh awaketh, and lo, a dream.

8And it cometh to pass in the morning that his spirit is troubled, and he sendeth and calleth all the scribes of Egypt, and all its wise men, and Pharaoh recounteth to them his dream, and there is none interpreting them to Pharaoh.

The Cupbearer Remembers Joseph

9↔And the chief butler speaketh unto Pharaoh, saying, 'My sins I am remembering to-day;

10Pharaoh was wroth against his servants, and putteth me in the ward of the house of the chief of the executioners — me and the chief of the bakers;

11and we dream a dream in one night, I and he, each according to the interpretation of his dream we have dreamed.

12And there is with us there a young man, a Hebrew, servant of the chief of the executioners, and we recount to him, and he interpreteth to us our dreams; each according to his dream he hath interpreted.

13And it cometh to pass, as he hath interpreted to us, so it hath been: me he hath restored to my station, and him he hath hanged.'

Joseph Interprets and Advises

14And Pharaoh sendeth and calleth Joseph, and they cause him to run out of the pit, and he shaveth himself, and changeth his garments, and cometh in unto Pharaoh.

15And Pharaoh saith unto Joseph, 'A dream I have dreamed, and there is none interpreting it, and I — I have heard of thee, saying, thou dost hear a dream to interpret it.'

16↔And Joseph answereth Pharaoh, saying, 'Not in me — God answereth the welfare of Pharaoh.'

17And Pharaoh speaketh unto Joseph: 'In my dream, lo, I am standing on the edge of the River,

18and lo, from the River coming up are seven kine, fat in flesh and of beautiful form, and they feed in the reed-grass;

19and lo, seven other kine coming up after them, poor, and of very bad form, and lean in flesh; I have not seen like them in all the land of Egypt for badness.

20And the lean and bad kine eat up the first seven fat kine,

21and they come into their inward part, and it is not known that they have come into their inward part, and their appearance is bad as at the beginning; and I awake.

22And I see in my dream, and lo, seven ears going up on one stalk, full and good;

23and lo, seven ears, withered, thin, blasted with an east wind, springing up after them,

24and the thin ears swallow the seven good ears; and I say unto the scribes, and there is none declaring to me.'

25And Joseph saith unto Pharaoh, 'The dream of Pharaoh is one; that which God is doing He hath declared to Pharaoh.

26The seven good kine are seven years, and the seven good ears are seven years; the dream is one.

27And the seven thin and bad kine which are coming up after them are seven years, and the seven empty ears, blasted by an east wind, are seven years of famine.

28This is the word which I have spoken unto Pharaoh: that which God is doing He hath showed to Pharaoh.

29Lo, seven years are coming — great plenty throughout all the land of Egypt;

30and seven years of famine have arisen after them, and all the plenty hath been forgotten in the land of Egypt, and the famine hath consumed the land,

31and the plenty is not known in the land because of that famine afterwards, for it is very grievous.

32↔And because of the repeating of the dream unto Pharaoh twice — it is because the thing is established by God, and God is hastening to do it.

33And, now, let Pharaoh look for a man discreet and wise, and set him over the land of Egypt;

34let Pharaoh do this, and let him appoint overseers over the land, and receive a fifth of the land of Egypt in the seven years of plenty.

35And they gather all the food of these good years that are coming, and lay up grain under the hand of Pharaoh — food in the cities — and have kept it;

36and the food hath been for a store to the land for the seven years of famine which are in the land of Egypt, and the land is not cut off by the famine.'

37And the thing is good in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of all his servants,

Joseph Appointed Governor

38and Pharaoh saith unto his servants, 'Do we find like this man, a man in whom is the Spirit of God?'

39And Pharaoh saith unto Joseph, 'After God's causing thee to know all this there is none discreet and wise like thee;

40↔thou art over my house, and by thy mouth doth all my people kiss; only the throne do I make greater than thou.'

41And Pharaoh saith unto Joseph, 'See, I have put thee over all the land of Egypt;'

42↔and Pharaoh turneth aside his ring from off his hand, and putteth it on Joseph's hand, and arrayeth him with garments of fine linen, and placeth a chain of gold on his neck,

43and causeth him to ride in the second chariot which he hath; and they call before him, 'Bow the knee;' and he hath put him over all the land of Egypt.

44And Pharaoh saith unto Joseph, 'I am Pharaoh, and without thee doth not a man lift up his hand or his foot in all the land of Egypt;'

45and Pharaoh calleth Joseph's name Zaphnath-Paaneah, and he giveth to him Asenath daughter of Poti-Phera priest of On for a wife; and Joseph goeth out over the land of Egypt.

46And Joseph is a son of thirty years in his standing before Pharaoh king of Egypt, and Joseph goeth out from before Pharaoh, and passeth over through all the land of Egypt.

Seven Years of Plenty; Famine Begins

47And the land maketh — in the seven years of plenty — by handfuls,

48and he gathereth all the food of the seven years which have been in the land of Egypt, and putteth food in the cities; the food of the field of the city which is round about it he hath put in its midst.

49And Joseph gathereth grain as the sand of the sea, very much, until one hath left off numbering, for there is no number.

50And to Joseph are born two sons before the year of famine cometh, whom Asenath daughter of Poti-Phera priest of On hath borne to him.

51And Joseph calleth the name of the first-born Manasseh: 'For God hath made me to forget all my labour, and all my father's house.'

52And the name of the second he hath called Ephraim: 'For God hath caused me to be fruitful in the land of my affliction.'

53And the seven years of plenty are completed which have been in the land of Egypt,

54and the seven years of famine begin to come in, as Joseph hath said, and the famine is in all the lands, and in all the land of Egypt there hath been bread.

55And all the land of Egypt is famished, and the people cry unto Pharaoh for bread, and Pharaoh saith to all Egypt, 'Go unto Joseph; that which he saith to you — do.'

56And the famine is over all the face of the earth, and Joseph openeth all in which there is corn, and selleth to Egypt; and the famine is severe in the land of Egypt.

57↔And all the earth hath come to Egypt to buy, unto Joseph; for the famine hath been severe in all the earth.
